Location and History

Thung Yee Peng is located on the east coast of Koh Lanta Yai, in Krabi province, Thailand. Unlike the popular west coast beaches, this area faces the mainland and is home to a vast mangrove forest. The village has a long history rooted in fishing and small-scale agriculture. Over the years, locals have turned to eco-tourism to protect their environment and share their way of life with visitors. The mangroves here are part of a protected area, and the community has worked hard to preserve their natural resources while offering meaningful experiences like guided boat tours and traditional homestays.

Geology and Ecology

Thung Yee Peng’s mangrove forest sits in a low-lying coastal zone with soft, muddy soil formed by sediment from nearby rivers and the sea. This unique geology creates ideal conditions for mangroves, which thrive in brackish water where salt and freshwater mix. The area supports a rich ecosystem that includes mangrove trees, monkeys, mudskippers, crabs, birds, and fish nurseries. These mangroves play a vital role in preventing coastal erosion, absorbing carbon, and serving as breeding grounds for marine life. The biodiversity found here is essential for the health of surrounding coral reefs and fisheries, making it one of Koh Lanta’s ecological treasures.

Marine Life and Coral Reefs

The marine life in Ang Thong Marine Park is diverse and abundant, with over 80 species of fish, 5 species of sea turtles, and many other marine creatures. The coral reefs around the islands are also worth exploring, with a wide variety of hard and soft corals, sponges, and other invertebrates.

Islands

Phang Nga Bay is a captivating archipelago of islands, each with its own unique charm and character. Among the many islands that adorn this emerald bay, these two are the most popular:

James Bond Island, officially known as Khao Phing Kan, is the most famous. It became a global sensation after featuring in the 1974 James Bond movie “The Man with the Golden Gun.” Its signature limestone stack rising from the water’s surface is a must-see.

Koh Panyee is a floating fishing village built entirely on stilts. It’s a testament to human adaptability and a fascinating place to explore. You can also enjoy some of the freshest seafood dishes here.

Getting to Phang Nga Bay

WeThung Yee Peng Village is easily accessible from anywhere on Koh Lanta. If you’re staying on the west coast, it’s just a 15–20 minute drive across the island by scooter or taxi. Follow the signs toward the east coast or use Google Maps to reach the village entrance. We also offer half-day eco-tours that include transport, a mangrove boat or kayak tour, and sometimes a local meal. If you’re coming from the mainland, take a ferry or minivan to Koh Lanta first, then continue by road. The area is well-marked and welcomes visitors throughout the year.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Thung Yee Peng Village and its mangroves is during the cool, dry season from November to April. At this time, the weather is sunny, humidity is lower, and the calm seas make kayaking and boat tours more enjoyable. The mangroves remain lush year-round, but visiting in the dry season means fewer mosquitoes and more comfortable conditions for walking the boardwalks or joining eco-tours. Early morning or late afternoon is ideal to avoid the midday heat and to see more wildlife activity. The green season (May–October) is quieter but can bring heavy rain and rougher seas.
